The 109th Christmas Bird Count
Sunday, December 14, 2009 to Monday, January 5, 2010
Each year between December 14th and January 5th, thousands of California birders and nature enthusiasts participate in one or more of the 100-plus Christmas Bird Counts held in California. This year will mark the 109th year of the event.
This holiday season join with thousands of others for this important citizen science effort across California. The one-day bird counts provide valuable data about the number of bird species and numbers of each species occurring within a set geographic area.
Whether you just watch your bird feeder or spend a full day in the field with friends, it is a great way to have fun and gather important information on bird populations.
Participants are typically assigned to teams based on their bird identification skill level and endurance. A $5 participation fee defrays a portion of the cost of tabulating and publishing the count results by the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Help is needed on many of these counts, so find one that interests you and contact the compiler for more information.
Click here to find a count near you. Simply scroll through the list to find a circle in your area, and then click on the Circle ID for more information and how to contact the compiler.
You can also find a comprehensive list of California Christmas Bird Counts (including all dates and compiler contact information) at Nature Alley.
Because we value the contribution of all Christmas Bird Count participants, this year Audubon California is offering a host of free benefits to everyone who takes part. Click here to sign up.
