Citizen Science

At Audubon California, bird science is a participatory activity. Every weekend, thousands of Californians take to the outdoors to pursue their love of birds, and we take advantage of the cumulative value of these outings in a number of ways. We encourage people to take part in a variety of monitoring activities, bird surveys, even a local Christmas Bird Count – and all of this feeds back into our usable knowledge base.

Audubon California also works extensively with chapters and volunteers to monitor sensitive bird species. If you’re interested in helping out, sign up for one or more of the programs below and we’ll send you updates about monitoring counts and other activities:

Long-billed Curlew

Tricolored Blackbird

San Francisco shorebirds

Altacal Audubon Society is partnering with CA Dept. of Fish and Game and USFWS to document historic and current Bank Swallow colonies state-wide. The last statewide survey in 1987 concluded that 70% of the population nested on the Sacramento and Feather Rivers! CDFG has plans to conduct a second formal statewide survey to update the status of the swallow. Participate by submitting your historic records and sightings this spring/summer at: www.altacal.org.
