Collaborative Funding Guidelines

Collaborative funding from National Audubon Society to Chapters is now in its third year. Collaborative funds are specifically for projects undertaken by a Chapter that advance the missions of both the Chapter and the National Audubon Society. I encourage you to apply, especially if you did not do so last year.

Audubon California will administer a simple grant program to distribute collaborative funds in the state. For fiscal year 2007- 08, there is a total of $25,000 in collaborative funding available to the Chapters of California. We will be making 10-15 grants of $1,500 to $2,500.

The process for granting funds was created with the input from chapter leaders representative of the five Audubon Council regions in California. In year three of collaborative funding we are keeping the process the same as last year, as it seemed to agree with most chapter leaders.

Please keep in mind as you design your grant proposals that priority will be given to projects that directly engage volunteers and the community. I will remind you that a repeatedly expressed need of Audubon Chapters is to expand our volunteer base and identify a succession of leadership for each chapter.

Suitable grant proposals should fit into one of the four following project categories:

  • Chapter Outreach Project: This category is designed for proposals that expand Audubon's visibility in the community. It could be volunteer recruitment, publicity for public events and activities, or a media outreach program. It must be clearly stated how these activities will promote Audubon’s profile and reach out to new Audubon leaders.

  • Chapter Advocacy Project: This category is designed for proposals to organize grassroots actions and lobbying activities. Possible projects include projects organized around regional, state, or national conservation priorities which protect birds, other wildlife and/or their habitats in your community. Workshops sessions based on conservation issues would be eligible for these funds to help train new volunteers to be activists.

  • Chapter Education Project: This category is designed for proposals to expand educational programs on a local level. Activities can range from in-school, on-site, or center related programs linked to conservation outcomes, leadership development and political/voter participation.

  • Chapter IBA/Habitat project: This category is designed for proposals for any habitat related project at an IBA site [link IBA page] or other high priority bird habitat, such as ecosystem restoration or citizen science projects or the development of a habitat conservation plan. Projects must include a component to augment chapter capacity and/or training elements.

Preference will be given to proposals which incorporate one or more of the following themes: (a) capacity building; (b) joint Chapter involvement [or participation]; (c) measurable benefit to bird habitat (d) projects that build membership activism and diversity and Audubon’s profile; (e) projects in districts without a strong conservation constituency.
