Birds are awesome

Catching insects in their mouths, diving bombing at 180 mph, spending five years over the open ocean, fighting someone much bigger -- birds can be pretty darn awesome. There's nothing scientific or methodical about this post, we just want to highlight some of the really awesome things that birds do. This is far from a complete list, but it's fun. Read on:

Some birds can catch insects in their mouths. If you think that’s so easy, you try it.

Other birds can also grab a live fish out of the water without hardly getting wet.

The Sooty Shearwater migrates nearly 40,000 miles a year, by far the longest annual migration of any living creature on earth.

A Blue-winged Teal can survive in temperatures as low as -58 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 122 degrees.

A giant flock of Starlings can just blow you away.

Hummingbirds are lightning quick, and instantly can fly in any direction or hover in place.

A typical young Albatross will spend five years at sea before finally returning to land to breed.

A diving Peregrine Falcon reaches speeds of up to 180 miles per hour or more.

Owls can have incredibly sensitive ears, so sensitive that they can hear their prey under snow or dirt. Their ears allow them to hear directionally, which lets them target their prey in the dark.

The biggest birds can be pretty tough.

But the little ones can also be pretty tough, too.
