California Important Bird Areas Copyright and Disclaimer

Data associated with the Important Bird Areas (IBA) program are available to others for conservation purposes as specified under the terms below.

Data Distribution Restrictions
National Audubon Society, through its Audubon California office, supports federal, state, and local agencies as well as nonprofits and other organizations in the conservation of California’s birds, wildlife, and their habitats. For this reason, data associated with the Important Bird Areas (IBA) program are available to others for conservation purposes as specified under the terms below.

  • The data provided in this release will not be used by the recipient for any other projects or analyses than those identified above. Requests to use the data in any other way should be made to Audubon. In general, the data is provided “as is” and is not to be used for commercial purposes, including redistribution.
  • Comprehensive site specific surveys have not been conducted for each IBA, therefore, the data provided in this release cannot be relied on as a definitive statement of the presence or absence of all species at a given location.
  • These data should not be considered a substitute for on-site surveys that may be required for an environmental assessment, environmental impact statement, or conservation planning.
  • The information and data associated with the boundaries are continually growing as new data are acquired. Therefore, the data released may become outdated. Updated information will be posted as available at www.ca.audubon.org/iba
  • Audubon California freely allows non-commercial copying and distribution of the Important Bird Areas geodatabase. Data should be cited on all electronic and hard copy products using the language as written below and as described within the metadata. Commercial use of the Important Bird Area data is prohibited.
  • With the exception of software programs, all materials on this CD ROM or downloaded from www.ca.audubon.org/iba, are copyrighted by the National Audubon Society. The Important Bird Area site summaries, including maps, and the geodatabase, may be downloaded, copied and distributed to others, subject to the restrictions provided herein.
  • Audubon California makes no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the use or appropriateness of use of the enclosed data, nor are there warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose or use. IBA boundaries are displayed in the site portfolios (and Google Earth KML file) not as solid, but rather dashed lines to suggest that boundaries are not necessarily fixed, as birds move through and between sites.
  • Boundaries were drawn to the best of our knowledge at the time of publication (December 2008) and are only good to the accuracy and scale indicated. Sites within the Important Bird Areas geodatabases were drawn at varying scales. Users should avoid displaying boundaries on maps beyond the scale the boundaries were drawn at. In general:
  • Small IBAs, particularly in urban areas, were mapped at approximately 1:10,000.
  • Medium IBAs, where boundaries could be easily discerned from the surrounding landscape, were mapped at 1:24,000.
  • Large IBAs, where boundaries were difficult to distinguish from the surrounding landscape, were mapped at 1:50,000 or greater.
(Individual scales can be found in the Geodatabase in the attribute table and also in Table 1 of the Final Report provided on this DVD.)
