Every year for over a century Christmas Bird Counts have organized across America mainly for adults during mid-December and early January. The Junior CBC is a stand-alone half-day event held to bring together birding families. The data from this count will be compiled to help Audubon track the progress of imperiled species and gauge the impact of environmental threats to birds and habitat.

The Yolo Audubon Junior Bird Count will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2012. There are three different levels of participation: kids and young adults 8-15 with an interest in birding (knowledge not required); leaders with good local birding knowledge (any age); parents and other volunteer drivers.

“The event is perfect for any kid who loves the outdoors,” said Dan Taylor, executive director of Audubon California. “It offers a chance to learn about birding in a fun, family-friendly way.”

The group will meet at the Yolo County Historical Museum (Gibson House), 512 Gibson Road in Woodland, at 9 am on Sunday, January 22. Please bring snacks, layered clothing, binoculars and field guides if possible and a pencil. Bird checklists will be provided. There are a limited number of binocular pairs for loan. The count will run for a maximum of two hours, reconvening back at the Gibson House for a compilation and some prizes. Participation is free.
