Credit to our friends at the Golden Gate Audubon Society for alerting us to this terrible story out of Oakland. On Saturday, tree trimmers hired by the downtown Post Office to trim trees not only broke down nests with chicks, but actually apparently fed several nests with chicks into a wood chipper. The birds in question were Black-crowned Night Herons. While Audubon California and local chapters for years have raised alarms over the trimming of trees in spring, while birds are nesting, the practice continues. For more information on bird-safe tree trimming, we recommend this fantastic guide from another chapter, Los Angeles Audubon.
