Monitoring shorebird nests in Colusa county

Shorebird Conservation Biologist Monica Iglecia is currently monitoring shorebird nests all along the Sacramento Valley. She is placing ibuttons, small temperature trackers the size of watch batteries, into American Avocet and Black-necked Stilt nests. This is all part of our work with the Migratory Bird Conservation Partnership. Three nests have received an ibutton, all within a twenty to thirty mile range in Colusa county.

Many people don't associate the Sacramento Valley with shorebirds, what these people don't realize is that this 27,000-square-mile area supports thousands of migrating shorebirds each year, making this one of the most important stopovers not only in the Pacific Flyway but in all of North America.

Monica's research will help the Partnership determine the best ways to do restoration and manage agriculture that benefits Stilts and Avocets.
