The 49ers have their bird, too

Because we're interested in such things, we were watching the NFL playoffs not just for the games, but also for the birds. And we had a lot of birds on the field -- Falcons, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. Now that we're at the Superbowl, it might be easy to think that only one of the two remaining teams is particularly birdy: the Baltimore Ravens. But that's not necessarily true. Turns out the San Francisco 49ers play at Candlestick Park, which is named for Candlestick Point. There are several theories as to how Candlestick Point got its name, but one of the prevailing ones is that it was named for the famed Candlestick Bird, otherwise known as the Long-billed Curlew. Take one look at the beak of this bird, and you understand how it got that nickname. So, bird people be glad -- the game isn't so one-sided after all, ornithologically speaking.
