Audubon joins other conservation groups in lawsuit to stop Arctic oil drilling

Audubon joined nine other conservation organizations yesterday to file suit in federal court in Alaska challenging the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement’s approval of Shell Oil Company’s inadequate oil spill response plans for the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. Audubon simply feels that because there is no way to clean up a major oil spill in the the cold, icy northern environment -- that is critical habitat for a number of migratory bird species -- that it is simply irresponsible to allow drilling to take place there. Here's what Audubon President David Yarnold had to say: “What kind of science says oil goes well with ice? It makes about as much sense as ordering a glass of crude on the rocks. In this case, the government was just plain nuts.” Other plaintiffs in the suit include Alaska Wilderness League, Center for Biological Diversity, Greenpeace, Natural Resources Defense Council, Ocean Conservancy, Oceana, Pacific Environment, REDOIL and Sierra Club.  They are represented by Earthjustice. Learn more about the suit here.
