Audubon's Richardson Bay sanctuary ready for the waterbirds to return

The San Francisco Chronicle notes today that the Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary is ready to welcome huge numbers of wintering birds:

The annual winged migration of waterfowl and shorebirds to Richardson Bay in Marin will soon start, meaning more than 900 acres of the historic area will be closed to boat traffic, including canoes, kayaks and windsurfers, from Oct. 1 to March 31.

The closure by the Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary will protect thousands of migratory waterfowl and songbirds that settle there each fall and winter as they migrate south from their breeding grounds in northern Canada and Alaska, saidJordan Wellwood, the center's director.
