Bikes and birding along the L.A. River

Cool event last weekend was an opportunity to show off nature to a new audience.

The group stopped for a photo at Elysian Valley Gateway Park, one of three pocket parks along the Los Angeles River where Audubon is organizing volunteers to restore native habitat. Photo: Audubon Center at Debs Park

As part of its ongoing effort to introduce the birds of the Los Angeles River to new audiences, staff from the Audubon Center at Debs Park last Saturday teamed with the Elysian Park Slow Ride (that's slow, as in casual and fun) for a morning of biking and birding. The group started at Steelhead Park and meandered along the river to the Spoke Bicycle Cafe. The Center provided binoculars and bird guides for the group. Although there had been rain in Los Angeles, the group took advantage of blue skies for this fun morning.

Bikes lean up against the rail as the group checks out birds on the river.
One participant actually brought her own bird companion.
Hanging out by the river.
