Very much like the Western Snowy Plover, which depends on habitat protections at California State Parks and conservation programs run by parks staff for its survival, so too are parts essential for the survival of another Threatened bird, the California Least Tern. California State Parks contain habitat for about 10 percent of the entire breeding population of the California Least Tern, which is listed under the Endangered Species Act. Three parks in particular provide essential habitat: Oceano Dunes SVRA, McGrath State Beach, and Huntington State Beach. The last two are within Audubon Important Bird Areas. If it could vote, the California Least Tern would definitely vote Yes on Proposition 21. (photo by Ryan Hagerty/USFWS)
