While we're still waiting for the Least Terns to come up the coast, we have been enjoying the Caspian Tern for the last several weeks. Kerry Wilcox, sanctuary manager at our Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary in Tiburon, reports that they've been seeing them for a while now. The largest of the terns, the Caspian Tern has been called "the King of all the terns," and is noteworthy for its deep red bill. It occurs nearly all around the world, but the ones we've been seeing have been wintering in southern Mexico and Central America. If you want to see their trip up the coast, look at the maps from January, February and March.
