Far from Baltimore

Saw a post on one of the listservs this morning about a sighting of a male Baltimore Oriole in San Mateo County. Now, you would think that the best place to find a Baltimore Oriole would be, well, Baltimore (or Camden Yards). But while this is a predominantly East Coast bird, we do have a small population of them that inhabits coastal California. But here's the thing, this tiny population in California is usually a wintering population. For some reason, a few Baltimore Orioles like to head over to coastal California rather than southern Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean when it gets cold. It's likely that the bird in San Mateo is on the move, headed north to northeast. But a cool sighting, for sure. (photo by David Brizinsky/USFWS)
