The Environmental Protection Agency has elected to cap a massive pile of DDT that is resting under the water off Palos Verdes, near Los Angeles. The $50 million project probably won't start until 2011, after the completion of several more studies. DDT was banned nearly 40 years ago partly because of its danger to birds. This particular contaminated area was identified as a particular danger after Bald Eagles were unable to breed on Catalina. Brown Pelicans were also driven nearly to extinction because of the contaminant.
