Keiller Kyle, Audubon California's Tricolored Blackbird Coordinator stopped by our Emeryville office to talk about our work to save this fantastic California bird. He had a lot to say, but these few facts stood out:
- In 1937, there were more than 3 million Tricolored Blackbirds in California. In 2010, there were 259,000.
- In 1900, the Tricolored Blackbird was the most numerous bird in Santa Barbara and San Diego counties. More than pigeons, more than gulls. Now, there are 5,000.
- Tricolored Blackbirds are great for pest control. Seventy percent of what they eat are insects; 7 of the 11 types of insects they eat are considered pests.
