Not-so-common beauty

Despite its name, the looks of the Common Yellowthroat are anything but. The male of the species sports a unique black mask that gives it an air of mystery. That, combined with its distinctive yellow throat and olive body, makes for a pretty attractive warbler. The bird can be seen throughout North America, but here on the Pacific Flyway, the Common Yellowthroat has a few quirks. We have populations of the bird that are pretty much resident along the coast in southern and middle California, but north of San Francisco we have a large group that arrives in the spring for breeding -- and this group goes almost all the way up into Canada almost to Alaska. During the winter, these migrating birds are hanging out in Mexico and Central America. Look for them among thick foliage, particularly when there's water around. (photo by George Gentry/USFWS)
