Portland Audubon treating Bald Eagle for lead poisoning

This May, the Audubon Society of Portland's Lacy Campbell (center) forded a creek in Longview, Wash., to retrieve a bald eagle that seemed unable to fly. A blood test revealed the eagle was suffering from severe lead poisoning. It is suspected that the bird ate a small animal that had lead shot in its system. The 3-foot-tall bird is now not only in treatment at Audubon, but is also contributing to research that may help protect other wildlife from lead. With funding from the Oregon Zoo, Portland Audubon has launched a study into the effects of lead on local raptors. (photo courtesy the Audubon Society of Portland)
