As we reported earlier, friends of the late Luke Cole last month organized a birding challenge to benefit Cole's organizaiton, the Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment. The goal of the effort was to count 400 different species in one weekend. Well, the results are in. It doesn't look like they got quite to 400, but, wow, did they ever get close. Really, it was an incredible effort that proves a number of things, among them that Cole was much loved, there's a ton of birding expertise in California, and lastly, that this state has an amazing diversity of species. An excellent tribute to Cole.
