Local birders are noting the arrival in Richardson Bay of some of the migratory shorebirds that pass through the Bay Area on their journey from their northern breeding grounds to southern wintering habitat (some populations, however, will remain here for the winter).
Over the course of the last few weeks small numbers of these birds have trickled in and have been spotted throughout the bay. Near the Richardson Bay Audubon Center and the adjacent islands Audubon staff and local birders have noted a Long-billed Curlew, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, up to 20 Marbled Godwits and 80 Willets. Keep your eyes on the shorelines throughout the Bay Area for increased numbers of these beautiful and amazing long-distance migrants during the next couple of months. (photo by Kerry Wilcox)
