Word this morning is that the State Legislature could decide as early as today on a late bill to approve the PXP offshore oil drilling deal in the Santa Barbara Channel. This bill is nearly identical to the budget proposal that was shot down in the Assembly. Put simply, the bill would create a new appointed committee to supercede the State Lands Commission (which has already shot this proposal down). Audubon California and other conservation organizations remain opposed to this deal because we feel the risks of offshore oil drilling are too high for birds and habitat. More later.
