USA Today takes a look at wind energy and bird deaths

A day or so ago, USA Today ran an interesting article on bird deaths at wind farms. If you've been following this blog, or any source of information on bird conservation, you'll know that this issue is nothing new and that the problem is very real. At the same time, conservation groups such as Audubon California have long recognized that climate change is the greatest threat to birds. For this reason, we strongly support alternative energy, including wind, on the condition that it be implemented as carefully as possible and in such a manner that it does not produce these terrible impacts on birds. Now, as Congress begins to debate real measures to address climate change, there's something a little suspicious about the appearance of articles such as this. The notion that the oil industry has been getting a bum rap with regard to environmental impacts is perposterous, almost as perposterous as the sudden concern by oil advocates for the birds.
