So you thought it was dead when the State Lands Commission shot it down, but you were wrong. Then you thought it was toast after the Assembly shot it down during the budget debate, but you were wrong again. Then maybe you thought it was over when a new bill was voted down in the last days of this year's legislative session, but you were wrong yet again. No, this idea to give Houston-based Plains Exploration & Production Co. new leases to drill off the California coast just will not go away. According to the Los Angeles Times, a new proposal will be introduced during a special session this fall to sidestep the State Lands Commission and push this idea through. We'll note again that Audubon California does not support new offshore oil drilling.
