Debate continues over South Coast marine protected areas

The Los Angeles Times today takes a look at the ongoing debate over implementing the Marine Life Protection Act in Southern California. The article focuses mostly on the potential impacts of fishing. Audubon California and local Audubon chapters have been heavily engaged in these discussions because we see a need to protect the fisheries, which are a major source of food for seabirds. Moreover, we want to protect breeding sites for many seabirds -- such as Ashy Storm-Petrels -- that have seen major population declines in recent years. (Ashy Storm-Petrel photo by Glen Tepke)
