More bad news for albatross colonies on Midway

Yesterday we reported that a colony of about 400 nesting Black-footed Albatrosses near the pier on Midway Island was wiped out when the tsunami hit the island. Birds that were further from the shore survived the impact fine, apparently. Today, we're hearing from refuge staff that at least 1,000 Laysan adult/subadults were also lost and tens of thousands of chicks lost. The only good news we've heard so far is the fate of a Short-tailed Albatross chick that was washed out of its nest, but recovered and returned to the nest.
