The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed the Bird Safe Building Standards yesterday. The regulations attempt to lower the number of bird deaths related to collision with buildings. San Francisco is located along the Pacific Flyway, a route migratory birds travel in the spring and fall that stretches from Patagonia to Alaska. According to Golden Gate Audubon Society, the group responsible for pushing the policy forward, several hundred million birds die each year in North America from collisions with windows in buildings, especially with “plate” and reflective glass while making the journey.
