Female American Kestrel checks out our nest box at Starr Ranch

By now, you have probably heard about the Barn Owl cam at the Audubon Starr Ranch Sanctuary. What you may not know is that for the last few years, American Kestrels have made nests in the same eucalyptus tree being used by the Barn Owls. Their nest has been about 25 feet higher. Unfortunately, we had to trim back the tree, as it was getting close to a 12,000V power line, and the cavity that the kestrels were using is now gone. Ranch Manager Pete DeSimone thought he'd take a shot at putting up a kestrel box with a webcam nearby in the same tree.

Today was the first time the female Kestrel checked out the box and, judging by her behavior, she will likely lay eggs in it if the pair decides to raise a brood. Enjoy the video:
