Governor Schwarzenegger signed SB 375 (Steinberg) which provides incentives for focusing growth within urban areas--a remedy to sprawl that threatens habitats near urban areas and generates greenhouse gases. Through a special grant Audubon California was able to provide expert legal advice on some of the tougher California Environmental Quality Act issues that had complicated passage of the bill. This is a very important political breakthrough -- easily the most heavily lobbied and negotiated environmental bill to make it to the Governor’s desk this year. Congratulations to the entire coalition including the CA League of Conservation Voters and NRDC for their effective advocacy, to Senator Steinberg and his staff for their hard work and to Governor Schwarzenegger for his leadership in signing this important measure.
