Tribe considers reintroducing condor to North Coast

photo USFWS/Clendenen

Even though it has been more than 100 years since the California Condor flew over the North Coast, the Yurok Tribe of Northern California is investigating the feasibility of bringing the bird back:

The tribe's interest in condors relates to its hopes to some day have a tribal park, said Yurok member and biologist Tiana Williams. The condor still exists in the tribe's oral history, with some elders having been told stories about the bird by ancestors, she said. There is also a place on the Klamath River with a name that's translated, “where he sits,” a reference to a condor perch.
